Researching historic silence

Crystal Z Campbell explores memory and historical erasure across film, painting, sculpture, performance, and installation, highlighting historical moments that have been overlooked or underrepresented. Campbell’s formal decisions are guided by research and archival materials to bring to light forgotten narratives. Campbell encourages engagement with complex social issues, inspiring audiences to reconsider their understanding of the past and how absences and voids shape the present.

Their work unfolds the underspoken and ‘underloved’ and often manifests as film, installation, collaged paintings, and now, in their most recent exhibition, also in handmade paper and glass. For this commission they been reflecting on a historical figure, David Fagen. He was a Black American man who was sent to both Cuba and the Philippines to fight on behalf of the United States. He defected during the Philippine-American War and became a captain in the Philippine Revolutionary Army. While he attempted to counter US colonialism, I have not found many of his words. As a result, I have yet to hear his voice. Instead, I have grappled with silence and the records and narratives that sought to give him a voice. I’ve been shuffling between hypervisibility, legibility, and illegibility, addressing disappearance and juxtaposing it with hyper-surveillance. I have been exploring the records and gestures through combinations of text, image, and paint to reimagine the possible geometries of liberation within one’s voice and silence.

Bio

Crystal Z Campbell (Prince Georges County, US) attended the Rijksakademie in 2013. Campbell’s work has been exhibited internationally in major institutions and film festivals, including the MIT List Visual Arts Center, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center, The Drawing Center, Nest, ICA-Philadelphia, Museum of Modern Art, BLOCK Museum, REDCAT, Artissima, Studio Museum of Harlem, Bemis, Project Row Houses, SculptureCenter, Semana Cinema de Negro in Belo Horizonte, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. Honours include a 2024 NYFA/NYSCA Film/Video Fellowship, 2022 Creative Capital Award, and fellowships/awards from Harvard Radcliffe, Pollock-Krasner, MAP Fund, MacDowell, and Skowhegan a.o.. Campbell’s writing appeared in publications like World Literature Today, GARAGE, and Hyperallergic.

They are a Visiting Associate Professor in Art and Media Study at the University at Buffalo. Their first solo museum exhibition at the St. Louis Art Museum is on until 09.03.2025, and they live between Oklahoma and New York.

Crystal Z Campbell explora la memoria, los silencios histórico y las comunidades marginadas.
