Reading

On the last Thursday of March, 28th, we welcome poet, art writer and curator Roy Voragen and artist Isolde Venrooy into our reading circle at SEA Foundation. Voragen and Venrooy were selected from the open call organised at the beginning of this year. As co-hosts of the reading circle in the fold #10 on Responsibility, they will bring with them a Curated Suitcase sharing the excerpts from the publications from Southeast Asia, related to their practice and the theme of the fold.

During the public conversation at the SEA Foundation, Isolde Venrooy will serve a pandan sponge cake on ceramic plates which she produced at EKWC in 2023.

Curated Suitcase

Curated Suitcase creates an itinerant space to attempt to understand the many ways we read, write and share. Curated Suitcase is a platform for critical and playful conversations about publications and publishing as a discursive practice. Curated Suitcase wishes to address a wide range of questions on the relevance and scope of publishing, writing, reading, seeing, knowing, feeling, eating, etc.

For SEA Foundation, the suitcase brought to Tilburg focuses on publications from Southeast Asia. We will read excerpts from titles such as:

  • Down South, Outgazing Our Views and Serving Suggestion: A Magazine Reading into Culture through Food published by Further Reading Press;
  • 3 zines by Singapore-based artist Ila;
  • Domestic Notes – 2 zines by Nuraini Juliastuti published by Reading Sideways Press;
  • Motherless Tongues: The Insurgency of Language amid Wars of Translation written by Vicente L. Rafael;
  • Ultimatum Orangutan by Khairani Barokka,

A meandering conversation on the reader’s responsibilities will be highlighted: how to read critically, emphatically and carefully and how to read with care – in solidarity – across seas and oceans (oceans of apathy)?

Kiri Dalena‘s short film will be screened during the event. Dalena is a visual artist, filmmaker and human rights activist who lives and works in the Philippines.

Bio Roy Voragen

Roy Voragen is a poet, art writer and curator based in Maastricht. He lived in Southeast Asia from 2003 to 2019. He has curated exhibitions and artistic projects in Bandung, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Manila, Singapore, Hong Kong, Yokohama, Kuala Lumpur, Maastricht, Cologne, Heerlen, Diepenheim, Aachen and Athens. His practice delves into the multitudes of relationships between porous bodies, stuttering languages and ambiguous spaces.

When living in Manila Voragen founded A Curated Shelf at community bookstore Kwago, and for an iteration at museum Kunsthaus NRW (Aachen, Germany). In early 2023, in collaboration with artist Isolde Venrooy, the shelf became a suitcase to signify that discourse is an unstable territory.

Bio Isolde Venrooy

The visual arts practice of Isolde Venrooy consists of objects, interventions and walks and is rooted in ecological thinking and making. She experiments with forms of collaboration, exploring, giving and receiving with friends, co-authors, and strangers. In a critical yet playful way, her work questions the relationship between humans and other entities, such as plants and fungi. Paintings, installations and walks invite active sensory experience, shared reflection and the exploration of alternative possibilities. This extends to the public programmes and publications Venrooy develops.

Her work has been exhibited at TENT in Rotterdam (NL), IKOB Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst Eupen (BE) and Kunsthaus NRW (DE), among other places. Her artistic practice continues to evolve through residencies, such as at the European Ceramic Work Centre, De Fabriek Eindhoven and Greylight Projects.
