The last Thursday of November (30.11), we will welcome performance maker and researcher Danae Theodoridou to SEA Foundation’s reading circle in the frame of fold #09 on Empowerment. The Reading on Empowerment is a collaboration between SEA Foundation and Fontys Academy of the Arts.

Practicing Democracy through Performance

The departure point for this reading session is ideas discussed in Theodoridou’s recent book Publicing – Practising Democracy Through Performance (Nissos 2022), where she proposes that performance today should operate as an act of ‘publicing’, namely as a frame for constructing public space and time anew, providing alternatives to capitalism. Through sharing concrete examples and processes involved in her artistic projects, the participants of the session will elaborate on different artistic approaches to participation, and examine the conditions under which art can create communities of people able to question established social configurations and power relations, practicing a more democratic, emancipatory, inclusive and just social coexistence. The session will also include a more experiential reading of a performance script involved in the maker’s work.

Bio Danae Theodoridou

Danae Theodoridou is a performance maker and researcher based in Brussels. Her artistic research focuses on social imaginaries, the practice of democracy and the way that art contributes to the emergence of socio-political alternatives. She teaches at Fontys University of Applied Sciences (NL), curates practice-led research projects, and presents and publishes her work internationally. She is the co-author of The Practice of Dramaturgy: Working on Actions in Performance (Valiz, 2017) and the author of PUBLICING: Practising Democracy Through Performance (Nissos, 2022).

The session is organized in collaboration with Fontys Academy of the Arts in the frame of the Creative Democracy research project, organized by Fontys Kenniscentrum Creative Economy.
