New Zealands contribution to 54th Venice Biennale

Michael Parekowhai (1968) is ‘selected by Jenny Harper, New Zealands Commisioner of the 54th Biennale di Venezia 2011. It was with great pleasure I enjoyed this sculptural installation “On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer”. Michael Parekowhai or in Mâori Ngäti Whakarongo. He is of Päkehä decent and is one of New Zealand’s most dynamic contemporary artists. His contribution is timely, compelling and memorable.
He graduated with a BFA (1990) and MFA (2000) from the University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts, and became an Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate in 2001.
Micheal Parekowhai currently holds the position of Associate Professor in Fine Arts at the University of Auckland. He lives and works in Auckland.
