Yulia Protsyshyn

Yulia Protsyshyn is a Graphic artist. She paints and uses printmaking as her medium. She is committed to structural composition with visual integrity and strategic vision. The basis of her artworks consists of figurative forms implemented into fictional space. She searches for combining dominancy and contrast while rhythmic strokes give shape and refer to texture, construction and aesthetics while striving for harmony and an inner sense of well being.

A sense of symmetry is omnipresent as are integrity and balance. Organic forms hint at micro- and macrocosms including geometry, architecture, metaphysics and astronomy. Embodied symbols function as a metaphor for the ethereal and spiritual senses. Asymmetry, proportionality, and emphasis act to oscillate structural juxtapositions of visual integrity.

Yulia Protsyshyn combines several textures in constructions where every layer has a narrative. Consequently, the result is a complex surface that allows a viewer to immerse in associativity. The process of layering imitates spatiality and in doing so the relation between external and internal, sensual and emotional, hidden and frank are all touched upon.

Artists at Risk

This residency came into being in collaboration with the Finnish NGO Artists at Risk. They are working at the intersection of human rights and the arts. Since 2013 AR has endeavoured to assist artists who are at risk politically and fleeing oppression and war globally. AR has assisted numerous persecuted or imprisoned artists, including Pussy Riot members Maria Alyokhina and Nadya Tolokonnikova, the Vietnamese singer, artist, and political activist Mai Khoi, Egyptian poet Galal El-Behairy or Kurdish artists such as Barıs Seyitvan. AR is dedicated to supporting persecuted art practitioners, facilitating their safe passage from their countries of origin, hosting them at AR-Residences and curating related projects, including the AR Pavilion.
